Congaree Land Trust Announces Permanent Protection of 168-Acre Property Along the I-95 Corridor in Orangeburg County
ORANGEBURG COUNTY, SC – Congaree Land Trust (CLT) is pleased to announce the conservation of the Hutto Family Property, a 168-acre private property in Orangeburg County. The Hutto Family Property is now permanently protected through a conservation easement, generously donated by the landowners.
This property sits along the I-95 viewshed, where its wetlands and hardwood forest stand out against a corridor traveled by millions of people each year. The land is made up primarily of wetlands, connecting into the Providence Swamp system, along with hardwood forest, ponds, and a small area of agricultural land. Its wetlands and swamp habitat add to the connectivity of natural areas in the region.
The Hutto Family Property has been farmed and held by the Hutto family for generations.
“This land has been in our family for at least seven generations, dating to the mid 1700s,” said the landowner. “It is a beautiful piece of our heritage and we want to make sure it is not disturbed for generations to come.”
Conservation easements like this one permanently limit incompatible development on the land while allowing it to remain in private ownership, protecting wildlife habitat, water quality, and working lands for future generations. The protection of the Hutto Family Property enhances the over 5093 acres of conserved land by Congaree Land Trust in Orangeburg County.
