A Lifelong Commitment to Conservation: Josh Arrants' CLT Story
As someone who has spent much of his career protecting and preserving the Palmetto State’s diverse ecosystems, Josh Arrants understands that conservation is about more than just protecting scenic views—it's about safeguarding the delicate balance of ecosystems that support a wide variety of plants and animals. Though now based in Montana, his deep connection to the land and its habitats continues to shape his work, especially his involvement with Congaree Land Trust.
Josh’s Connection to Conservation and CLT’s Mission
For Josh, conservation is deeply personal. As he explains, the mission of CLT—to protect the natural lands of South Carolina through conservation easements and land stewardship—holds the key to ensuring the long-term health of the state’s wildlife, flora, and fauna. "Every acre matters," Josh says. "From protecting watersheds and wetlands to preserving forests and critical habitats, CLT’s work is vital to maintaining the biodiversity that makes South Carolina unique."
Josh’s career as a naturalist began in the wetlands and forests of the COWASEE Basin, where his passion for conservation was sparked—and it is in this very area that CLT has focused much of its efforts. With its extensive floodplains and vital river systems, the COWASEE Basin is home to a wide range of rare and endangered species—making its protection a critical piece of South Carolina’s broader conservation strategy.
"The ecosystems of the COWASEE Basin are where my interest in nature was ignited," Josh shares. "Now, even though I live in Montana, I continue to return to South Carolina to lead nature walks, teach, and survey the flora and fauna. It’s incredibly rewarding to share the beauty of this area with others and help protect the natural legacy of the land."
Conservation at the Grassroots Level
While the need for widespread, global conservation efforts is apparent, Josh emphasizes that local initiatives like those spearheaded by CLT play a crucial role in protecting natural areas and fostering a conservation ethic in communities. "Conservation can sometimes feel like a big-picture concept," he says. "But the real victories often happen at the local level—through landowners working with CLT to conserve their properties, through community events that engage people with nature, and through educating the next generation of conservationists."
"The work CLT does with landowners is so important," Josh says. "By providing tools and resources for land protection, CLT helps to ensure that South Carolina’s natural heritage is safeguarded for the long term."
Additionally, Josh emphasizes the importance of CLT’s educational offerings—such as nature walks, talks, and outdoor events— that help the public connect with nature in meaningful ways. "I’ve had the privilege of leading nature walks for CLT, and I love seeing how people react when they realize just how interconnected we are with the natural world," Josh explains. "These experiences inspire people to care about conservation and to take action, whether that’s protecting a piece of land or simply appreciating the natural beauty around them."
Looking to the Future
Josh’s vision for the future of conservation in South Carolina is one of collaboration, inclusivity, and continued commitment to preserving natural lands. "Land trusts like CLT will be at the forefront of protecting critical habitats, especially as we face the challenges of climate change and rapid development," he says. "We can’t rely solely on national parks or state forests to protect all the species and ecosystems we need to conserve. Every acre of land counts, and CLT’s work will be key to making sure those acres are protected."
He also believes that CLT will play an increasingly important role in raising awareness about the intrinsic value of nature. "The intrinsic value of nature is something I hold dear," Josh says. "Even species that have gone extinct, like the Ivory-billed Woodpecker or the Passenger Pigeon, are a reminder that we need to act now to protect what we have left. I hope that through CLT’s work, we can give future generations the chance to see and experience the species that are at risk today."
A Shared Legacy of Stewardship
Though Josh now resides in Montana, his heart remains firmly rooted in South Carolina’s rich natural heritage. Through its work to protect lands, engage communities, and foster a deeper connection to nature, Congaree Land Trust is helping ensure that South Carolina’s natural wonders will continue to thrive for generations to come. As Josh says, "We need to protect these lands, not just for us, but for the future—for the species that depend on them and for the generations who will walk these lands long after we’re gone."
For Josh and for all of us, the mission of Congaree Land Trust is more than a cause—it’s a commitment to preserving the beauty, biodiversity, and life-sustaining ecosystems of South Carolina for today, tomorrow, and beyond.
